4x5 portrait

i was visited by this beauty at my studio.
of course i brushed off my 4x5 camera and captured her.

portraits

there's something magical about polaroids.  taking the picture and waiting for it to develop just makes me happy.  i love the honesty in them.

wedding

this summer i was lucky enough to be trusted to document a wedding.  i love weddings, the fact that two people love each other enough to want to be together for their whole life is a beautiful thing.
thank you for trusting me for your big day.

memory

i am currently working on my final project for school.  in february i will graduate and be off on my own.

i had the pleasure of going to hrísey, a tiny island in the north of the country where i shot the film for my project.  all of june i was free to roam around, documenting the faded remains of my childhood memories of this beautiful place.  this is one of my test shots taken during one of my nightly walks.

every night, the clouds would flirt with the light, protect the mountains, and explore the valley.  the birds sang to each other, the waves splashed quietly on the rocks, and i listened as the oh so soft sea breeze caressed my neck.  beautiful hrísey, how i miss you.

a perfect creature

she appeared to me.
a perfect creature from the sea.
she brought hope.
she set me free.

roots

pretty little project. roots.

text:
summer fades into autumn,
the wind rages all around.
she shivers and tries with all her might to hold on to her leaves,
the wind is too strong.
her leaves are ripped off and stripped away,
she tries swaying with the wind
clinging to the hope that submission is the key to keeping herself intact.
the hours stretch into days, the days into weeks,
it gets harder and harder to hold on.
her last leaf is torn away and along with it the sense of protection,
of warmth,
of belonging.
she stands alone and naked,
shivering in the wind and the cold.
her nakedness is mirrored all around,
in the trees standing silent and unmoving.
following their lead, she retreats deep into her roots
determined to remember
the warm days of summer,
waiting for the promise of spring,
knowing that winter is a season that will not last forever.

honesty

portraits of óskar and sara. the most beautiful, honest, sincere 17-18 yr olds i know.

Feed the birds...

feed the birds in winter.
come spring, they'll sing for you in return.

where does my path lead if not to you?

patiently,
quietly
i've waited,
hoped,
dreamed.
as the months stetch into years,
i grow impatient,
feel lost.

where does my path lead if not to you?

i don't know when...

i don't know when my happiness
started to depend on your happiness

i don't know when your touch and your kisses
became the only thing i crave

i don't know when my heart
started to beat in tune with yours

but i know i never want it to stop

lazy days

the post-exhibition days have been wonderfully lazy... filled with cherries, popcorn and water with lime.  the sun finally decided to show up yesterday after making us wait for it such a long long time :) the wait was so worth it though and we enjoyed the sun that much more when it finally came out.  i'm getting used to the slower pace, but really feel like i need to start speeding things up again... when i have nothing to do i get restless.

i have a kids shoot on wednesday :) i went location scouting on saturday and found the perfect place to shoot... i'm really looking forward to this shoot and i can't wait to start editing some photos again.  i'm working out what packages i'd like to offer on future photoshoots, so if there are any requests or advice they'll all be very appreciated.

i've been playing around with an old graphlex camera that i borrowed.  i am really enjoying the large format and love developing the negatives to see what i've got :) these two photos were among the first that i shot with it... they make my heart happy.

why film?

i get asked this question a lot... why film? it's much more tedious than digital photography.

i love film photography.
the fact that it doesn't always come out the way you expect raises the stakes a little.
i love the smell of the developer and fixer in the darkroom and the peace that comes with hours spent under a red light.
the satisfaction that follows the final perfect print after dozens of trials doesn't compare to any feeling that i connect to digital photography.
film gives me something solid in my hands, something fragile.
even damaged film renders something that i just don't seem to be able to recreate digitally.
analog photography is definitely my first choice whether it's to record memories or create art.

tomorrow!

i can't believe how quickly time goes by these days.  i feel like the school year just started last week, but tomorrow is opening day of this year's exhibition... seriously?? how?

this is one of the photos i am sharing in the exhibition.  it's part of a series called creatures.

i hope to see you there, if not tomorrow then sometime before the exhibition closes on June 5th.

i've been tidying up my blog and making it pretty :) i hope i'll be able to have it the way i want by the end of the month.

i'm off to the darkroom for some printing, hopefully i'll have a one good final print tonight.

good friday photo shoot

i finally got around to scanning some photos to share on here.  these photos are from a photoshoot on good friday. i have been waiting since school started to have the opportunity to shoot my beautiful cousin so when it finally came i jumped at the chance... we went to a deserted farm and played around for hours in the rain and wind.  i think it even snowed a little.  she was wonderful, didn't complain once about being barefoot in the cold, totally lived up to my expectations :)

all photos shot on kodak trix film, top two on a canon eos film camera with a lensbaby, bottom two on a holga.
